Every ice hockey coach should be aware of the signs and symptoms listed below after their athlete experiences a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body. This type of contact may result in a concussion.
Each coach should be aware and keep close observation of the player involved. Signs coaching staff should observe for include:
- An athlete that appears dazed or stunned
- An athlete that is confused about an assignment or position.
- An athlete that forgets an instruction.
- An athlete that is unsure of game, score or the opponent.
- An athlete that moves clumsily.
- An athlete that answers questions slowly.
- An athlete that loses consciousness (even briefly) should receive prompt medical attention.
- An athlete that shows mood, behavior or personality changes.
- An athlete that can’t recall events before or after a hit or fall.
If any of these symptoms or signs are observed by any member of the coaching staff the player should be removed from play and medical attention sought.
